Memorial Day Weekend

This weekend we had all kinds of visitors.  A while back, Cory and Rachel decided they would use the long weekend to come visit Kinley for the first time.  We didn't know we would be visiting La Vernia so soon, so they actually got to meet Kinley sooner than they thought.  Brent also had a 3 day weekend, so he decided to come down, too, and Todd lives close, so he came over as well.  We spent a lot of time hanging around the house, just visiting.  Emily LOVED baby Kinley and pretty much wanted to be wherever she was.  We enjoyed a bunch of good food, and sitting around chatting.
On Sunday, my best friend was having a pool party/BBQ, so we all headed over there.  The food was fantastic.  I didn't swim, so I could take care of Kinley, but everyone else did.  This weekend, I suspected Kinley was starting to get sick, so I was pretty worried about her.  She had been having diarrhea most of the weekend, and just wasn't eating well.  I was getting different opinions about what could be wrong, but I just knew something wasn't quite right with her.
Regardless, we had a lot of fun, and enjoyed having so much family in town.  It was a lot of fun to interact with Emily.  She's so chatty now, and that's enjoyable.  I can't wait to enjoy Kinley's personality the same way (although I love the sweet little cuddlebug I have right now).  I know that raising our daughter will constantly be a mix of loving to see what stage comes next, but also nostalgic about the things that have passed.  I'm sure that never changes!
Below are some pictures from the weekend.

Rachel bought the girls some mathching dresses, and we tried our first "photo shoot" of the cousins.  Kinley isn't a very cooperative subject yet, so it was hit or miss.

Attempt #1 - Kinley doesn't understand she needs to keep her eyes open!

The lack of muscle control made this a little difficult!

Meeting More Family

While in La Vernia, Kinley got to meet her 2 uncles she hadn't met yet, along with her aunt Rachel and cousin Emily.  Now, she has met everyone on my side of the family, except (soon-to-be) aunt Katie.  Katie was getting back from a trip to Ecuador the weekend we were visiting, and she wasn't able to come out to meet Kinley.

Meeting Uncle Brent

On Saturday night, we went to dinner and then to Gramps and Gran's bowling game.  We met some friends of Gramps and Gran's while we were there.  Gran and I left to take Kinley home, while Gramps and daddy stayed to finish bowling.

On Sunday, Gran took Kinley to early church and Sunday School with her, and we met her for late church.  Everyone got to "ooh" and "aah" over the new grandbaby.  After church, Cory, Rachel and Emily came out to spend the day.  We had fun hanging out with them.  Emily LOVED baby Kinley, even though she doesn't do much.  She held her, helped Gran feed her a bottle, and loved on her all afternoon.  I think she's ready to be a big sister!!  :-)

Surprising Gran

When we had lunch with Gramps and Gran on Monday, Gran had no idea that we had been working for a few weeks on a plan to surprise her.  We had checked our calendars to find a time we could go to La Vernia for a few days, so Gran could have some Kinley time.  I had coordinated everything with Bob, and several other people knew we were coming, and planned to come out to visit while we were there, too.

I knew it was going to take a lot to back a newborn to go on a trip for several days, but I didn't know how nerve-wracking it would be for me, to make sure I was remembering every little thing we might need.  I did well, though, and had everything ready to go (in the car even) as soon as John came home from work.  Gramps and Gran had bowling Saturday evening, so we planned to leave our house by 2:00 so we could get there before they had to leave.  I strategically planned Kinley's feedings, so I could feed her right before we left, and hopefully she would make it most of the way there before we had to eat.  We actually got out of the house a little earlier than planned, and got on the road.

All ready for my first road trip

Our sweet little baby slept the whole way!  We stopped at Buc-ee's in Luling so we could go to the bathroom, and this is about the time I figured Kinley would need to eat.  I sat in the back at that point, and fed her a little bit, but the car lulled her right back to sleep.  Once we got to the house, our plan was to leave Kinley on the doorstep and hide.  It was so funny!  I wish I had taken video, instead of trying to take pictures, because it would have caught the reaction so much better.  Oh well . . . maybe next time.  We had let Bob know what we were going to do, so he could send her to answer the door.  She was putting on her shoes at the time, and he had a hard time getting her to come to the door.  Once she did, though, she was in total shock!  It was fun to watch.

Surprise, Gran!!

We had a great few days just hanging out, meeting more family (a separate post), eating good food, and just enjoying sharing our baby girl.  Unfortunately our last night there, Gramps and Gran got food poisoning (we think from salad) at Clear Springs, so it put a little damper on our last day there.  It didn't keep Gran from cuddling her little Kinley, though.

Our trip back was not quite as smooth.  We didn't make it as far as I hoped we would before Kinley wanted to eat.  I got in the back with her, but the angle of the car seat in the base makes it hard to feed her a bottle.  We eventually just had to pull over so I could take her out and finish feeding her.  We made it the rest of the way home without incident.  It was a fun trip, and I'm glad we went!

Lunch With Gran and Gramps

Since John had to work on Mother's Day, we worked out an alternate plan to see my mom today instead.  John proposed that we meet them somewhere in the middle to have lunch.  We decided on a restaurant in Columbus.  We were actually able to get up and all get ready and make it right on time.  Gran and Gramps were a little early, but I was impressed we were able to get to somewhere out of town on time, with a newborn!  We planned to meet a little later, after the big lunch rush, so hopefully they wouldn't mind us sitting and talking for a while.  They gave us a corner table, and we were able to sit and visit for a couple of hours.  It wasn't the best scenario ever, but it was nice to visit, and Gran definitely loved her Kinley time!  Kinley did great in the car both ways, until we were about 10 minutes from home.  We hit a little bit of traffic on the highway, and she decided she was hungry.  Our little Irish princess has quite a temper and she was madder than mad by the time we got home!  Other than that, it was a great trip that I imagine we will be repeating every now and then.

This is where Kinley spent most of her time!

First Mother's Day

Today was my first Mother's Day.  I think I had high expectations, so I felt a little disappointed in the afternoon, because my day didn't really go how I had hoped.  John had to work, so that was a little bit of a bummer.  He was gone early, and I was on baby duty solo.  For whatever reason, Kinley was really fussy pretty much all day, which is unusual for her.  She didn't really want to be put down anywhere, so I found myself just holding her most of the day.  I was able to quickly get 1/2 a tuna sandwich down while she sat quietly in the swing for about 10 minutes, but that was all.  By the time John got home close to 3:00, I was feeling frustrated and unappreciated.  I had hardly eaten, and hadn't been able to shower.  So much for being treated like a queen!

John wanted to take me out for dinner, but I was skeptical, because I knew there would be a wait anywhere that we tried to go.  He took over Kinley duty and let me go get in the shower.  While I was showering, he called ahead to Texas Roadhouse and got us on the list.  I got ready to go while he fed Kinley.  When we got there, we only had to wait about 10 minutes, which was good since I was starving.  Kinley actually slept, so we were able to enjoy a nice dinner together.  After we left, we went up to The Cheesecake Factory and got a couple of desserts to go.  We came back home and caught up on some TV while we ate dessert.

Although I was a little disappointed with my day at first, I'm a mommy now, which is something I've wanted for a very long time.  I really didn't need anything more than the gift of my precious baby girl, who wanted to snuggle with me all day long.

One Month of Kinley

Kinley at 1 month old

I can hardly believe my little girl is already a month old!  Everyone told me the time was going to fly, and they aren't kidding.  I remember when I was a kid and time seemed to drag by most of the time.  I sure would like to return to those days sometimes.  Our little girl is just as sweet as they come.  I still look at her and can't believe that she's ours!

The first month has gone by like a whirlwind.  Between feedings, diaper changes, baths, napping, laundry and general housekeeping, there doesn't seem to be time for much else.  As much as I like my house clean, I have let a lot of things go, just so I can spend plenty of time cuddling this precious little blessing.  The last thing I want is to realize in a year that her newborn days just slipped by, because I was too worried about trivial little things.

We don't have a real schedule down yet.  She is pretty consistently eating every 3 hours.  Occasionally at night, she will go 3 1/2 or 4 hours between feedings.  Those nights are like heaven!  I haven't been quite as tired as I thought I would be.  If I'm not quite ready to be up in the morning, I can usually get her to go to sleep if I put her in bed with me.  I know all the experts would jump down my throat about that one, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do!

Here are some 1 month highlights:

** She weighs close to 8 pounds (we don't have an official weight, but at the doctor on Tuesday, she was 7 pounds, 9 ounces)
** She is still wearing newborn clothes and diapers, and most of her clothes are still too big.  I was expecting an 8 pound baby, so I didn't think we'd be using newborn stuff for very long, so I've had to pick some more small things up here and there.
** She eats 3 ounces every 3 to 3 1/2 hours, and tends to wear a lot of it.  She's a messy eater right now, and a lot leaks out of her mouth.  Lucky for us, though, she has yet to ever spit up.
** She makes the cutest little noise when she's really hungry and starts eating.  She used to do it when she was nursing, too, and it has always made me laugh.  One of the cute little quirks about her.
** She gets a bath every other day, and does NOT like it.  We have tried the baby bathtub once since her cord fell off, but she still screamed like crazy, so I've still just been using the sponge thing on the bathroom counter because it's quicker.
** Another thing she hates is diaper changes.  A lot of times she cries as soon as you put her down on the changing table, but most definitely screams as soon as you touch her with a wipe.  I have gotten through a few changes with little to no crying, but most the time, she hates it.  I hope this is something she outgrows, because I hate making her upset.
** She loves the swing, and some days, it's my lifesaver - the only way I can get some things done.
** She will happily sit in her bouncer or lay on her floor mat for 15 or 20 minutes at a time.
** Tummy time is not her favorite thing, and she often falls asleep.  She does like to be up on someone's shoulder, and will lift her head and look around.
** She mostly sleeps in the bassinet at night.  If I can't get her back to sleep quickly, I will put her in bed with us, just so I can get some sleep for my own sanity.
** She is starting to smile a lot.  I think it's still mostly involuntarily, but sometimes when she's looking right at me and gets this big smile, it completely melts my heart!
** She is a champion sleeper in the car.  Any time we got somewhere with her, she falls asleep quickly and stays that way through most of our errands, or whatever we're out for.  I know this won't last forever, but it sure is nice for now.

We are so in love with our little girl, and can't wait to see how she changes and grows in the coming months.  God has given us a wonderful little blessing, and we couldn't be happier.

Here are some "outtakes" from our 1 month photo session.  I'm clearly no professional, and trying to get a 1 month-old to cooperate is not the easiest task I've ever taken on!

Family Comes to Town

John's brother Andy, sister-in-law, Erin and their 2 girls, Sophia and Rhyan came to visit today.  They have been anxious to come and see baby Kinley, and we were glad they were able to get some time off to come down.  They came straight from the airport and met us for dinner, then came to our house to check out the baby.  The girls were really excited to see her.  We enjoyed visiting with Andy and Erin, and plan to see them again tomorrow for lunch.

First "Sick" Visit

We had to go for a sick visit with Dr. Flanagan today.  :-(  Yesterday, I was noticing that her left eye seemed to be watering quite a bit, and having a lot of "goop" draining from it.  Throughout the day, the "goop" turned from white to yellow.  Overnight, when she would wake up to eat, her little eye was all crusty, and having a lot of drainage.  I called the doctor first thing in the morning, and got us an appointment for 2:30.  Several friends on facebook suggested that it might be a clogged tear duct, but we thought we should take her to get checked out.  At the office, they told us Dr. Flanagan was running behind, but we could see the nurse practitioner right away.  We told them we would just wait for the doctor.  She weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces, which was a gain of a whole pound since 2 weeks ago at her 2 week checkup.  As soon as Dr. Flanagan walked in and looked at her, he said she definitely had an infection.  He said from reading the chart, most people would think it was a blocked tear duct, but he said looking at it, it's definitely infected.  He told us she probably just picked up some bacteria somewhere, or could have even rubbed something in her own eye.  It's just something that can happen.  I still felt guilty, because she's still so young.  He prescribed some ointment for us to put in her eye 3 times a day, and he said that should clear it up just fine.

On a side note, he measured her head, and it's now 14 inches, which is where he wanted it to be at 1 month, so he said it's growing just fine.  I'm really happy with our pick in a pediatrician.  He really takes time to check her out and talk with us.  He talks to Kinley and interacts with her, even though she's little and can't really respond.  I definitely have been happy with the way he handles her.  Hopefully we won't be back until her 2 month check-up.

3 Weeks of Kinley

My mom left last Friday evening, so it has been some trial and error around here.  We definitely have slacked on home cooked meals.  It's just hard to do much of anything, especially on days that John is working.  I'm trying, and some days are better than others.  I'm so glad I'm not one of those women that has to go back to work after 6 weeks.  I think I would have a panic attack!  Here are some pictures of Kinley's 3 rd week.
