Kinley's 1st Halloween

Today was Kinley's first Halloween.  We decided we weren't going to take her to trick-or-treat.  She obviously can't eat the candy.  We thought it would be more fun this year to just dress her in her costume and sit out in the front yard to hand out our candy.  I had a cute 1st Halloween outfit for her that she wore during the day.  I took some pictures of her after I got home.

Then, we fed her and got her dressed in her zebra costume.  I put her out in the grass in front with our big candy bowl.  She had never been in the grass before, so she was feeling that out, along with digging into the candy bowl.  She just looked too cute sitting out there.  A few different people who stopped by with their kids asked if they could take a picture of her.  We, of course, think she's adorable, but I guess other people do, too.

We sat out front for a while, and Kinley started getting a little fussy.  I knew she was getting tired, but I didn't want her to miss all the Halloween fun.  We were giving out a variety of candy, and Kit Kats were one of the things we had.  There were some that were covered in white chocolate that was dyed orange.  I decided it wouldn't hurt her too badly - those are just cookie wafers covered in chocolate.  So, I broke one in half and gave her one "stick" to eat.  She was unsure at first, but then devoured it.  She even chewed on my fingers, which had chocolate on them from catching her gooey pieces.  She definitely loved it!!  I won't make a habit of giving my infant chocolate, but I just wanted to see what she would do.

After that, I took her inside to put her down for a little nap.  On a side note, we are trying to cut out that evening nap, but if she doesn't have a good afternoon nap, she just can't do it yet.  Some nights we can keep her occupied enough that she doesn't get too fussy.  Tonight wasn't one of those nights, though.  Our babysitter had her out in the afternoon, so I don't think she had a great afternoon nap.  Shortly after I came back downstairs, we ran out of candy, anyway, so we brought everything inside.  I do have to say that I knew several people with stories of kids ringing their doorbells late, long after they had turned out their lights.  I was impressed that once we came in and turned out the porch light, we didn't have 1 knock on the door.

We enjoyed Kinley's first Halloween, and I imagine it will only get to be more fun as the years go on!

Blankie

My mom, Kinley's Gran, made some blankies for Kinley before she was born.  Several people had told me to have multiples of whatever "security" item we chose to use.  My mom made 1 of them and then made 2 more when she was here the 2 weeks after Kinley was born.  At this point, we mostly just use them when she sleeps.  This is also pretty much the only time we use a pacifier.  When she goes down to sleep, though, she definitely looks for both things now.  She grabs her paci on her own and puts it in her mouth.  Sometimes she just leaves her blankie over to the side and strokes it with her hand.  Sometimes she pulls it under her head and lays on top of it.  She definitely has become accustomed to her blankie, and looks for it when she goes to sleep.  So far, we can use them interchangeably, but I don't know if she will pick a favorite at some point.

Sunday Nap

This afternoon after we carved our pumpkin, Kinley had a bottle and then was ready for a nap.  I was washing her sheets so I put her down in our bed.  I was doing some laundry and trying to get a little bit of cleaning done, but John decided he wanted a nap, too.  I got this picture of them napping together.  I thought it was too cute.

Kinley's 1st Jack-O-Lantern

After church today, we came home and ate lunch while Kinley took a nap.  After she woke up, we spent some time carving our jack-o-latern for Halloween.  We haven't carved a pumpkin the last few years, but it's something I definitely wanted to do now that we have a baby.

We covered the table with a plastic dropcloth, and Kinley was definitely most interested in that almost the whole time.  She loves crinkly sounds, so she kept grabbing at the plastic most of the time.  I drew the face on (nothing very complicated) and then John cut the top off.  We scooped all the guts out and then took some pictures.  We tried to get Kinley's hands a little dirty, feeling it all out.  She wasn't very interested, but didn't seem to mind, either.  We took some pictures and then I carved the face.

I imagine next year will be even more fun!

Halloween Party

Today, we went to a little Halloween party with Kinley.  Nidia, a friend of mine that I taught with at my former school, was having a Halloween party for kids 2 and under.  Nidia and I were pregnant at the same time, and due only 3 days apart.  Her little boy, Isaac, was born 6 weeks early, so he's almost a month older than Kinley.

Thankfully that cold front blew through, so Kinley wasn't sweating to death in her costume!  We were running late, but we ended up being the first people there.  I guess that's how it goes with babies!!  I had fun visiting with people I used to teach with, and we met some new people as well.  There were 3 babies and a 2 year-old.  It was fun, but impossible to get any pictures with them all looking!!  They all looked so cute, though.  It was fun to watch the babies "discover" each other.  Isaac and Kinley were super cute with each other.  They looked so puzzled to see someone else their size.  It was precious!  Nidia had every adult that was there vote (by secret ballot) for their favorite costume and Kinley won!  She got a $20 gift card to Wal-Mart, which we used toward a portable high chair for her.

We had fun talking "baby talk" with some other parents and just getting out to do something different.  Sometimes we just get stuck in our typical weekend routine, and it was nice to do something different.  I'm sure as Kinley continues to grow up, we will find more and more things that she can enjoy doing.

Our super cute zebra

"Hey, you're in my space."

"Well, now that you're here, let me check you out."

"Hi mom"

"I see my toes!"

"See, here they are."

"Oooohh, you have toes, too!  Can I eat them?"

Happy zebra!
